SPEAKER: Kohei Saito and Savannah Schoenecker

In his last years, Marx made notes on the natural sciences with astonishing intensity, even though he was not able to integrate these new findings completely into his critique of political economy. Saito will analyze these notebooks, reconstructing Marx’s expanding ecological interests. “Marx’s ecology” is not an imaginary construct by later Marxists, but a methodological foundation for analyzing today’s ecological crises under globalized capitalism.  Schoenecker will discuss the Standing Rock occupation, from which she has just returned.  With the participation of Native American activists and thousands of others from across North America, with the occupation of land, and in spite of the bloody repression that has included police dogs attacking peaceful demonstrators and fire hoses in freezing temperatures, Standing Rock has achieved a new stage of the freedom struggle that represents a pushback against the reactionary US election result.

KOHEI SAITO, currently a visiting scholar at University of California, Santa Barbara, is a participant in the MARX-ENGELS GESAMTAUSGABE (MEGA) and the author of KARL MARX’S ECOSOCIALISM: CAPITAL, NATURE, AND THE UNFINISHED CRITIQUE OF POLITICAL ECONOMY (forthcoming), as well as articles for MONTHLY REVIEW and other journals.

SAVANNAH SCHOENECKER is an environmental and peace activist in the Los Angeles area, who traveled to Standing Rock at the end of November.
